GObike chairs the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board, which provides recommendations to the city on the implementation of plans, policy, and projects to ensure safe travel for all roadways users is considered.

A board of the City of Buffalo Common Council, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee is charged with the review of Buffalo DPW’s presentation of on-going and future infrastructure projects to ensure they best accommodate the needs of all roadway users including pedestrians, bicyclists, and people with disabilities. Meetings are open to the public and held on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30PM – 7:00PM in room 1417, City Hall.

Established in 2006, the board has diligently worked over the years to address concerns with our street design so that all projects, including street construction, re-construction, or maintenance projects, are reviewed and recommendations are developed to ensure it accommodates the needs all roadway users including pedestrians, bicyclists, and people with disabilities.

In 2008, the City of Buffalo passed New York State’s first complete streets policy reaffirming the board’s role in the city’s process and mandating that all street projects include bicycle and pedestrian facilities unless it exceeds 20% of the total project cost.

In 2016, the City of Buffalo and GObike adopted the Bicycle Master Plan for the City of Buffalo – funded in part by a grant to GObike Buffalo from New York State through a collaborative agreement between the Department of Transportation and NYSERDA, and with matching funds provided by the City of Buffalo.

There are many reasons to promote bicycle ridership in Buffalo and the city’s new Bicycle Master Plan will serve as our blueprint to providing an even safer and more connected bicycle network citywide that will improve safety, public health and quality of life for our citizens. It is also a plan that promotes bicycling infrastructure for the benefit of all city residents.

– Mayor Byron W. Brown (2016)

Beyond bikes, GObike and the Bike Ped board work on pedestrian safety. From safer intersections to repaired sidewalks.
