The following summaries and calls-to-action come from our friends and partners in the New York  Safe Streets Coalition which made up of advocacy groups, cycling unions, bike shops, and individual pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, parents, and teachers.

Stop Super Speeders Outreach

Dear #StopSuperSpeeders Coalition Partners & Supporters,

We are making tremendous progress on our #StopSuperSpeeers campaign in New York. Last week, SB4045 passed the Senate Transportation Committee. But with less than two weeks left before the Senate adjourns, we need your help to ensure that the Speed Limiters for Repeat Offenders bill (SB4045 / A2299) passes THIS legislative session.

Please join our #StopSuperSpeeders week of action on June 2-6!  We are mobilizing coalition members and supporters to take action next week in 2 easy ways:

Step 1: Mobilize

  •  Urge your members to contact Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart Cousins, Governor Hochul

Step 2: Engage on social media

  • Share graphics and sample posts with hashtags

  • Tag Speaker Heastie, Majority Leader Stewart Cousins, Governor Hochul

Use our #StopSuperSpeeders Week of Action for sample email language, phone scripts, social media posts, graphics, and more. Feel free to customize any of our graphics and add your logo.

Our #StopSuperSpeeders campaign was inspired by the life-saving and effective push to implement ignition interlock technology (breathalyzers) on the vehicles of those who drive drunk – but applied to the worst-of-the-worst recidivist speeders. For example, in New York City, we know that the 1.5% of drivers who collected 6 or more speeding tickets in a year killed over 21% of pedestrians in 2022.

This small group of drivers poses a hugely outsized risk to members of our communities and themselves, and we have technology now that can prevent this recklessness from happening – while not impeding people’s access to their own vehicles (license suspensions are also ineffective safety policy, as 75% of people drive anyway).

Similar bills have recently been passed in Washington, D.C., Washington State, and Virginia, but New York’s is the strongest, most comprehensive bill and will be a model for the nation.

The bill has received endorsement editorials from Newsday, The New York Daily News, and Bloomberg.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or comments.

We hope you will take action with us next week.

Thank you.
