Building Neighborhoods Where People of All Ages Can Thrive
Age-Friendly: Go Local is a program for grassroots and community-based organizations who are working to build age-friendly neighborhoods that promote health equity.
This summer, GObike is partnering with the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative to pilot diverse ways to meet older adults’ transportation needs in the North End neighborhood of Niagara Falls. This is a community-identified and led program that serves an area that is over 25% older adults, many of whom are low income and reside in public housing.
We aim to empower seniors to not only feel more comfort with multiple modes of transportation, but also feel that their streets allow them to move freely, safely and in connection with their communities.
Golden Gears Demo-Days
GObike will be hosting an open workshop series that offers seniors the chance to explore a wide range of bicycles, including accessible and adaptive bikes designed for diverse bodies and physical abilities. The program draws inspiration from Cleveland’s Silver Spokes program and GObike’s longstanding experience delivering bike-safety education across Western New York.
Hosted at locations like the Niagara Falls Housing Authority’s Wrobel Towers apartments and the Doris Jones Community Center, GObike’s Education Team will create a structured environment where participants can explore equipment, develop road-safety skills, learn basic bike maintenance, and participate in group rides.
Senior Stakeholder Committee & Upcoming Traffic Calming Pilot Projects
Running parallel to the Demo-Days, GObike will implement a senior-specific outreach and engagement process to assess seniors’ transportation challenges and perceptions of safety when traveling by foot, bike, or mobility device in the North End of Niagara Falls. That feedback will be correlated into an upcoming project to design, plan, and install safety interventions – like painted crosswalks and bike parking – to help ease challenges faced by seniors when getting around in Niagara Falls that reflect their real lived experience and needs, connecting with nearby destinations like D’Amelio Park, the Niagara River Greenway trail network, the Amtrak Niagara Falls Station, and the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center.

GObike is looking for Niagara Falls residents aged 50+ to take a brief survey, to help inform safety improvements and transportation options for older adults who walk, bike, use wheelchairs, or take public transit in Niagara Falls.
This questionnaire is part of the Niagara Falls Golden Gears summer senior bike program, funded through the Health Foundation of Western & Central New York’s Age Friendly Program, in partnership with the Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative.
