Pop-Up Complete Streets 2019

Communities Building Safer Streets

Pop-up complete streets projects are temporary street treatments that provide community members and decision-makers with a tangible visualization of how walking, bicycling, and public transit facilities can create safer, more engaging streets.

133 Crosswalks and Our First Hardscape Bump-Out

In 2019, we installed our first hardscape curb bump-outs using locally-produced recycled plastic wheel stops on Wilmuth, Olcott, Wilson, and Odell streets in Lackawanna. Youth from Mt. Olive Baptist Church’s summer program and the neighborhood, as well as GObike volunteers, helped design and paint the crosswalks and bump-outs.

[This project] shows you what you can do when you work together.

We painted 133 crosswalks in 13 communities with the support of 20 community groups and organizations.

Additional Projects

Additional projects included two crosswalk refreshes in Niagara Falls with students from the Niagara Street Elementary school and the Teen Connection Center; Buffalo Public School crosswalks in cooperation with Say Yes, and many others, outlined below.

Project Benefits

Connectivity

Pop-up projects provide connectivity between neighborhoods, parks and greenspaces, and business districts, allowing residents to safely meet their needs.

Transportation

Crosswalks and curb bump-outs encourage walking by making it safer for people to do so. They enhance our transportation network by creating increased access for pedestrians.

Safety

Pop-up complete streets slow down motor vehicle traffic thus improving safety for pedestrians.
