May is National Bike Month, and as part of our participation GO Bike Buffalo is holding a Bicycle Beauty Pageant. Since the printing of the Bike Beauty Pageant article in Artvoice, a number of people have contacted event organizers to enter the contest.
Participants were provided with a bicycle from our Community Workshop to be decorated and/or manipulated to represent this year’s theme: Grimm’s Fairy Tales. The bicycles will be judged on their creativity and artistry at a pageant-style gala event at 8pm on Saturday, June 2nd. Contestants’ bikes will be on display in front of Campus WheelWorks, 744 Elmwood Ave., throughout the day of the event as Buffalo casts their people’s choice votes. Voting for your favorite bike automatically enters you into a prize raffle to win a gift basket from our local sponsors! Rusty Chain beer will be provided by Flying Bison Brewery and food will be provided by GO Bike.
We are also thrilled to announce that—courtesy of Campus WheelWorks and Felt Bicycles—we will be raffling off a Felt Café 3 cruiser bicycle—a bike worth over $500!! Raffle tickets can be purchased all day long, and we will announce the winner at the end of the night.
After announcing the winner of the pageant, all of the contest bikes will be auctioned off to benefit GO Bike Buffalo. This event is the first of an annual series which has the potential to bring together Buffalo’s community of artists, makers and cyclists, and to focus their collective efforts on making Buffalo a more bike friendly place.
Sponsorship including over $1000 worth of prizes for the pageant has been provided by Campus WheelWorks, Felt Bicycles, Positive Approach, Rick’s Cycle Shop, Buffalo CarShare, Merge, Flying Bison Brewery, Urban Roots, The Lexington Co-Op, Caffe Aroma, Evolation Yoga, and Amy’s Place.
Come see these wonderful works of functional art and help determine the winner. Maybe you’ll go home with prizes or even a bike! All event proceeds will go directly to cycling advocacy in Buffalo, so the more support you show the more our city grows.
